Rabbits

Why are Vaccinations so important?

Rabbits should be vaccinated against Myxomatosis and Viral Haemorrhagic Disease (VHD). Myxomatosis was originally introduced in Australia to control the spiralling Rabbit population where they were considered pests. It eventually made its way to England where it is still ommon in the wild rabbit population. The bad news is that the death rate is up to 90% which is why it's so important to vaccinate.

Also it is easily transmitted by mosquitoes, ticks, mites, lice and fleas which means even if your rabbit does not come into contact with other rabbits it is still important to vaccinate. Myxomatosis is a horrible disease for a Rabbit to suffer from, you only need to do a quick search on the web to see the signs and symptoms, for this reason, Little Lodgings will only take boarding bunnies with an up to date Vaccination card for both diseases.

VHD is an equally nasty disease. It was only discovered in the UK in 1992. It is spread through direct contact and also through bedding etc. It is a rapid disease, usually causing death within 24 hours.

Vaccination is not expensive and well worth getting done. If you ever need to board your bunnies, you will be hard pushed to find anywhere to take them while you are on holiday.

Vaccination against Myxomatosis should not be done within 2 weeks of a vaccination against VHD.

Guinea Pigs

Food (A Guinea Pigs Favourite thing after cuddles)

* Guinea Pigs can’t make their own vitamin C so it must be given to them with their food. Supplements are not necessary in a rounded diet.

Carrot, Cucumber, Celery, Spring Greens, Tomatoes, bell peppers and Romaine Lettuce are good daily foods.  Apple, melon & grapes might be enjoyed occasionally as treats!

Grass (NOT lawn mowings - these heat up in the piles and cause distress to sensitive Guinea tummies)

* Nails need to be checked and clipped regularly as they grow quick and may curl under and hurt sensitive pads if left. It is also important to ensure a soft surface such as shavings as being on hard floor all the time can give them sore feet too.

* Guineas need variety in their lives, and to this end Little Lodgings provides hidey-holes and toys for them to explore while they stay with us
